The following resources are primarily focused on evidence-based health care and research rather than on personal or anecdotal information. While there is a place for the latter, I believe you deserve the right to make informed decisions based on research and best practice.

This is a beautiful website with resources to help inform and educate about natural birth options and to empower women to make pregnancy and birth choices appropriate for their lives. Also includes a due date calculator and a resource directory of midwives.

Coalition for Improving Maternity Services

CIMS (pronounced ‘kims’) is a coalition of individuals and national organizations with concern for the care and well-being of mothers, babies, and families. Their mission is to promote a wellness model of maternity care that will improve birth outcomes and substantially reduce costs.

Childbirth Connection

This organizations mission is to improve the quality and value of maternity care through consumer encouragement and health system transformation. You will find information to educate and inform consumers, health care providers, policy makers and insurance payers about family centered maternity care as a model for safety, satisfaction and savings.

Choices In Childbirth

Exists to help women make informed decisions about where, how and with whom to birth and to ensure they have access to the full range of birth options. CIC strives to improve maternity care across the country and to ensure that the birth of each child is treated with the reverence that it deserves.

The Cochrane Library

Cochrane Reviews are systematic reviews of primary research in human health care and health policy, and are internationally recognized as the highest standard in evidence-based health care. They investigate the effects of interventions for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. They also assess the accuracy of a diagnostic test for a given condition in a specific patient group and setting.

Henci Goer

Award-winning medical writer, internationally known speaker, and acknowledged expert on evidence-based maternity care. Website has many of her articles, a valuable resource.

Ina May Gaskin

Founder and director of the Farm Midwifery Center, in Tennessee, she is author of numerous books including; Spiritual Midwifery, Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth, Ina May’s Guide to Breastfeeding and Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta. Doula’s of North Americas’ mission is to provide training and certification opportunities for doulas of varied cultures, educational backgrounds, ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic levels. Cesarean Birth

VBAC

Women-centered, evidence-based information for childbearing women and maternity care professionals. Includes access to evidence-based resources, educational materials, and support for VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) and cesarean prevention.

ICAN

International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN), works to lower the rate of unnecessary cesareans, supports vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), and encourages positive birthing through education and advocacy.

La Leche International

An international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. (Multi-lingual).

Office on Women’s Health

OWH is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services and works to improve the health and sense of well-being of women and girls. Breastfeeding topics include: Why Breastfeeding is Important, Learning to Breastfeed, Breastfeeding in Public, Going Back to Work, Pumping and Milk Storage. Available publications include: The Surgeon Generals Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding, Your Guide to Breastfeeding and more. Also included, information about how Health Care Reform supports employed breastfeeding mothers. (Spanish).

United States Breastfeeding Committee

The USBC is a nonprofit coalition of more than 40 nationally influential professional, educational, and governmental organizations, that share a common mission to improve the Nation’s health by working collaboratively to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. Included is detailed information about breastfeeding legislation, policies, state breastfeeding coalitions and more.

James McKenna

James J.
